FULL HISTORY
The De La Estrella family is one of the oldest Nephilim families in the Philippines. Their origins date back to the time when the first Nephilims came to the island after being discovered by Ferdinand Magellan.
The De La Estrellas ran the Manila Institute for the first 150 years since its establishment before the Clave began appointing other families as Heads. But even to this day, they remain to have a powerful influence over other Shadowhunters in the country. In fact, they have been instrumental in the ‘cleansing’ of Downworlders and indigenous traditions and beliefs that once reigned the lands before the Spaniards came along.
Nowadays, they aren't as unforgiving and cruel as they were then, especially with the Accords in place. But it is still believed that Downworlders are what they know as Mga Isinumpa ( The Accursed Ones ) punished by the heavens.
That's why when Adelfa gave birth to a boy with bright, white hair and emerald green eyes, they were quick to see him as a curse and Adelfa an embarrassment who brought shame to their family.

Despite the Accords, a lot of transgressions against Downworlders tend to get overlooked in the Philippines so what's one more engkanto wrongfully charged with a crime punishable by death? Adelfa was distraught until eventually she was overwhelmed by grief that led to madness.
Not wanting to let what happened spread among the Nephilims and Downworlders, Adelfa and a newborn Kris were banished and hidden away in one of their quiet and smaller headquarters in Leyte. But of course, secrets never really stay secret for long.
Adelfa's younger brother and parabatai, Aurelio, stood by his sister's side when they were sent away. He was one of the best Nephilims the Manila Institute had to offer and was the golden boy and the pride of the De La Estrallas.
But no amount of reverence could stop him from coming with his sister.
Aurelio never did like Downworlders much, but he was the only one close to Adelfa to know of Asterio, Kris's engkanto father, and how much he had meant to her; not even his prejudice could be blinded by that.
Being admired by many, it was Aurelio's sudden departure that caused quite a stir among Nephilims instead of Adelfa's, which had so far been kept under wraps. There were lots of speculation and questions that troubled their family, to which Aurelio thought: 'buti nga (good).

Life in Leyte had been peaceful which was good for Adelfa who had become despondent and difficult to speak to. Sometimes she'd speak with words but most of the time, Aurelio could only hear her humming unfamiliar melodies.
But the one thing that kept Adelfa seem sane was Kris.
She was able to take care of Kris the only way mothers can. She could even speak to him properly even when he still couldn't speak himself. This was a relief for Aurelio who had no idea how to take care of babies. The one thing he could teach him, however, was the art of combat.
Not being able to have proper Nephilim training and education like most Nephilim children did, Aurelio ended up mentoring Kris instead. Aurelio didn't want to try at first, but eventually followed his gut instinct which turned out to be the best decision he'd ever make.
Kris's white hair and green eyes made him appear very much like part-engkanto but on the inside, he was a Nephilim through and through. He wasn't all that great with lessons involving reading and memorizing but he was a natural when it came to combat.
Even though his uncle would constantly chastise him about reading his books, secretly he was already proud of the idea of him growing up to be an excellent fighter like he was.
